Acceptable Use Policy

What free hosting can and cannot be used for, what "fair use" actually means in numbers, and what happens before we ever take a site down.

Effective

1. What this covers

This Acceptable Use Policy applies to every site we host, to the client dashboard, and to any other service we operate for you. It forms part of our Client Terms of Service.

It exists for two reasons. Hosting is shared infrastructure, so one site behaving badly affects others. And hosting is free on every plan, which only works if "free" is not read as "unlimited".

2. Fair use of free hosting

Free hosting is sized for a normal business website: your pages, your images, your blog, your traffic. Almost every client will never come close to a limit and will never hear from us about one.

As a guide rather than a hard meter, fair use means something like 25 GB of data transfer a month and 2 GB of stored files. A normal business website uses a small fraction of that, so almost nobody needs to think about it. If you go past it because your business is doing well, that is a good problem and we will simply talk to you about it, probably to congratulate you first.

What is not fair use is using a website as infrastructure for something else:

  • Hosting or distributing large files, video libraries, backups, or software downloads.
  • Using the site or its content delivery network as a general-purpose file store, CDN, or proxy for another property.
  • Running an email relay, a bulk-mail sender, or a mailing list off our infrastructure.
  • Cryptocurrency mining, distributed computing, or anything that exists to consume compute.
  • Automated traffic you generate against your own site to inflate numbers, or load testing without arranging it with us first.

If your site genuinely needs more than a website (a large media library, an application backend, heavy traffic), that is a real project and we will quote it. It is not something to solve by quietly leaning on the free tier.

3. Content that is not allowed

You may not publish, store, or link to any of the following on a site we host:

  • Anything unlawful under U.S. federal law or the law of Texas.
  • Material that infringes someone else's copyright, trademark, or other rights.
  • Malware, viruses, exploit kits, or code designed to damage or gain unauthorised access to a system.
  • Phishing pages, fraudulent offers, fake storefronts, or anything designed to deceive a visitor into handing over money or credentials.
  • Content that sexually exploits or endangers a minor. We report this to the authorities without notice and without exception.
  • Pornography or sexually explicit material.
  • Content that promotes or incites violence, or that attacks people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
  • Content promoting the sale of illegal drugs, weapons, or regulated goods you are not licensed to sell.
  • Deceptive medical, financial, or legal claims, and anything an ordinary reader would understand as a scam.
  • Personal information about someone published to harass, intimidate, or expose them.

Some categories are lawful but are not something we host, because we are a small business that stands behind every site with our name in the footer. Adult content, gambling, multi-level marketing, and payday lending are in that group. If you are unsure whether your business fits, ask us before you pay a deposit rather than after.

4. Conduct that is not allowed

  • Attempting to access, probe, or scan systems or accounts you do not own.
  • Interfering with service to any other site or user, including denial-of-service traffic.
  • Circumventing, disabling, or tampering with security controls or rate limits.
  • Removing or disabling the visitor counting or the credit line on a site we host. Both are conditions of the free hosting rather than of the site. You own the code and may change anything in it, so if you want either of them gone, move the site to your own hosting or ask us.
  • Reselling hosting to a third party, or hosting a site you have no relationship with.
  • Sharing your dashboard credentials, or letting someone use your account to do anything on this list.
  • Sending unsolicited bulk email that points to a site we host, in breach of the CAN-SPAM Act.

5. What we do before we do anything drastic

Taking a small business's website down costs them customers. We treat it as a last step, not a first one. In the normal case:

  • We email you and explain what we are seeing.
  • We give you a reasonable period, usually seven days, to fix it, and we help where we can.
  • If a resource problem cannot be fixed quickly, we may throttle or cache more aggressively rather than take the site down.
  • Only if it is not resolved do we suspend the site, and we tell you before we do.

We act immediately and without notice only where we have to: child sexual abuse material, an active phishing or malware campaign, a live security compromise, a legal order, or something actively degrading other clients' service. We will still tell you what happened as soon as we reasonably can.

A suspension does not affect your ownership of your site. If we suspend and you want to go elsewhere, we will hand you your code and content.

6. Reporting a problem

To report abuse, a security issue, or a site of ours you believe breaks this policy, email support@alamo-digital.com. Include the URL and enough detail for us to find it.

For copyright complaints specifically, follow the process in our Copyright Complaints policy.

If you have found a security vulnerability in something we run, tell us before telling anyone else. We will not pursue anyone who reports a genuine vulnerability in good faith, does not access other people's data, and gives us a reasonable chance to fix it.

7. Changes

We may update this policy as circumstances change. Material changes affecting hosted clients will be emailed. Continuing to use the service after a change means accepting the updated policy.
